Johnson Announces Support of Kagan as Senate Judiciary Committee Concludes their Work

Washington, DC—U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced his support for U.S. Supreme Court Nominee Solicitor General Elena Kagan today as she received the support of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Johnson met with Kagan last week.  Johnson said:

Solicitor General Elena Kagan is intelligent, qualified and deserving of a position on the United States Supreme Court.  Now that the Senate Judiciary Committee has completed their thorough review of her extensive record, it is the duty of the full Senate to use their role of advise and consent to examine her record.

She has had a lifetime of varied experience that has prepared her for this next step.  Elena Kagan has received the highest rating possible from the American Bar Association and is well within the broad mainstream of contemporary jurisprudence.

As I have said before, I do not believe that decisions on Supreme Court appointments should be based on political ideology.  It is the role of the Senate to advise and consent when it comes to the President’s nominee – not pick the person we would want most in the job.  I voted for both of President Bush’s nominees and look to the rating of the American Bar Association.

Elena Kagan more than clears the bar for support and I look forward to voting for her on the Senate floor.
