Sioux Falls, SD – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced today that Elk Point will receive a $353,285 federal grant from the Recovery Act Capital Improvement Program in the Department of Health and Human Services. The funding will be used to improve and expand services at Union County Health Foundation in Elk Point.

“This funding will help improve health care in Elk Point and around the state to help ensure that our citizens receive the best health care available,” said Johnson.  “This funding is a great example of how the economic recovery package is helping local communities in South Dakota.”

This funding for Elk Point is part of a total of $3.5 million in grants for six health centers around the state. These grants will be used to address health center facility and equipment needs and increase access to health care. Six different community health organizations are receiving the funding including Isabel, Fort Pierre, Howard, Rapid City and Sioux Falls.

Resources from the stimulus package are continuing to help local communities across South Dakota. Funding has already been distributed to local housing commissions to improve our communities and to cities and towns to continue the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, and for weatherization, the state energy program, rural housing programs, and local health services. Additional resources from the legislation will continue to be distributed in the weeks ahead. 

The stimulus package signed by President Obama is focused on tax cuts for the middle class, infrastructure investments and job creation. This funding is a prime example of the kind of resources the legislation provides to help improve communities while advancing South Dakota’s economy.
