Washington, DC—U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today released the following statement on the Senate’s confirmation of Governor Tom Vilsack to become the Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture:
I am proud that the Senate has acted swiftly today to confirm Governor Vilsack as Secretary of Agriculture. He knows the needs of South Dakota’s farmers and ranchers combined with a deep understanding of the issues facing our state.
I am especially pleased that our agricultural community will have a Secretary that supports a ban on packer ownership of cattle and targeting program payments to family farmers rather than multi-millionaires. Secretary Vilsack will be a strong voice for the needs of our state, and I look forward to working with him as the department continues to implement the new Farm Bill.
