Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today congratulated Lake Area Technical Institute (LATI) in Watertown for being recognized as one of the top community colleges by the Aspen Institute. LATI was named today one of four national runner-ups with distinction for the Aspen Prize for Community College Experience and will receive a $100,000 reward.

Earlier this year, Johnson toured the third phase of a major expansion project on the LATI campus. In FY2010, Johnson, a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, secured a $500,000 earmark to help the school create an energy technology program for students. Johnson also led the effort to secure an additional $150,000 earmark for LATI’s fire and rescue training program.
