HEALTH CARE: REAL STORIES FROM SOUTH DAKOTANS
I am the classic single parent! I have one 3 year old boy and I fight and struggle every day to make sure he has everything he needs - NOT everything that he wants. I work every day to bring home a pay check so that we have food, clothing and a place to live. I am out of money before I am out of month.
My son does qualify, at this time, for Medicaid but just barely. We are about $50 away from the top of the income guidelines. Every January, when it’s time to do the paperwork to re-qualify, I wait, full of dread, until I get the paper in the mail that says he still is eligible. If we were not able to receive this service, I don't know what I would do!
There is NO way I could pay for insurance for him. We don't have cable or even Internet -- let alone the money to pay over $100/ month in insurance premiums. I am not sure what I would do if we ever had any major medical problems and did not have Medicaid. When Tyler was born, he had a hole in his heart. My husband and I were unable to pay for insurance at the time. Tyler had to see a pediatric cardiologist (many thousands of dollars). I will probably be paying on that bill long after he has graduated from high school.
How many people are financially ruined because of the cost of GOOD health care? I would like to believe that there is a way to reform our country’s health care and insurance system, but I don't want to see the quality of our care suffer or for quality health care to be available only to the extremely wealthy.
I really appreciate your effort and interest in improving the health care and our insurance situation in South Dakota and across the country.
Thank You,
Lindsey – Clark, SD
