HEALTH CARE: REAL STORIES FROM SOUTH DAKOTANS
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. Fighting the insurance company was as bad as fighting the cancer. Claim after claim was denied.
I have what is called "preferred provider," which means I get a preferred provider discount. My insurance company tried to get out of giving the discounted rate saying my provider wasn't one of their providers.
Luckily, I had a great agent who handled all my claims. He even took my case to a national convention in Las Vegas to try to get answers about why they did this. Of course, he didn't get any answers.
We dropped that insurance company for our family health insurance plan, which was going up $2000 a year but I had to stay with the old company since our new insurance company put a rider on me for my pre-existing condition of cancer.
We farm and health insurance is a very big expense for us. Luckily for us, we are still able to keep our health insurance.
