Today in the Senate

May 16, 2012:

The Senate will convene at 9:30 a.m. Following Leader remarks, the Senate will proceed to the consideration of motions to proceed to the following budget resolutions, en bloc: S.Con.Res.41 (Senator Sessions-his interpretation of the Obama budget); H.Con.Res.112 (Congressman Ryan); S.Con.Res.37 (Senator Toomey); S.Con.Res.42 (Senator Paul); and S.Con.Res.44 (Senators Lee, Paul, DeMint).

HEALTH CARE: REAL STORIES FROM SOUTH DAKOTANS

I am 64 years old. I retired from my full time position as VP of Services at an agency in Sioux Falls that supports people with developmental disabilities. After my COBRA ran out, I had to purchase my own health insurance.

Due to the cost, I had to accept insurance with a high deductible, one which will hopefully partially cover any major medical event. I have no dental coverage and no optometric/ophthalmology coverage.

I am looking forward to turning 65 so I will have Medicare. My mother is 86 and has Medicare. She has supplemental insurance and when she had breast cancer a few years ago, with Medicare and her supplemental, she had to pay very little from her own savings for her medical care. This is as it should be.

I truly believe we must have health insurance that is NOT profit based; that covers every American citizen; that does not refuse insurance to those with preexisting conditions; that does not stop coverage or significantly increase cost because one uses their insurance; that provides for preventive care and that ensures each citizen has a primary care physician.  Most importantly, I believe we must have single payer insurance.
