HEALTH CARE: REAL STORIES FROM SOUTH DAKOTANS
I am currently employed full time with a local non-profit agency. I am fortunate in the fact that they offer health insurance as a benefit, paying 85% of my premium.
However, I pay 100% of the family portion that I need to have for my children. I currently am paying $223.52 a month in order to maintain coverage for them. I have learned it is going up another 17% when it is renewed in June, but I will not be receiving a cost of living raise this year.
I am facing a major decision as I barley am brining enough net wages home to pay my bills now. I don't know if I can truly afford to maintain insurance for my children. My son has a mood disorder disability, which requires medication. My insurance covers it at this point. However they are now requiring prior authorization for medications he has been on for years. In making my decision, I will be looking at the cost of his medications versus the cost of the insurance.
The reality is truly coming to deciding between insurance and food for my children.
Thank you,
Cindy – Mitchell, SD
