Today in the Senate

May 16, 2012:

The Senate will convene at 9:30 a.m. Following Leader remarks, the Senate will proceed to the consideration of motions to proceed to the following budget resolutions, en bloc: S.Con.Res.41 (Senator Sessions-his interpretation of the Obama budget); H.Con.Res.112 (Congressman Ryan); S.Con.Res.37 (Senator Toomey); S.Con.Res.42 (Senator Paul); and S.Con.Res.44 (Senators Lee, Paul, DeMint).

There will be up to 6 hours for debate on the motions to proceed, equally divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees.  Upon the use or yielding back of time (at approximately 4:00 p.m. if all time is used), the Senate will conduct up to 5 roll call votes on the motion to proceed to each concurrent resolution.  There will be 2 minutes of debate between each vote and all votes after the first vote will be 10 minutes in duration.

Explanation of Request:

 

Dakota Rising Entrepreneurial Development partners with local communities to invigorate rural entrepreneurs and their enterprises, in order to raise rural standards of living through the private sector.  The requested funds would allow for continuation and expansion of the program.  Selected communities would be able to participate in a statewide learning community sharing best practices around entrepreneurship cultivation, and have access to more intentional, specialized resources to foster local entrepreneurship. Selected individuals, whose businesses are located within a selected community and are beyond a start-up phase of development, will receive access to a fellowship community of rural South Dakota entrepreneurs focused on growing their businesses, access to mentors, professional development, a peer advisory board, and other resources.

Explanation of Request:

 

The Prosperity Through Innovation Initiative at South Dakota State University will stimulate the economy by developing standard operating procedures to foster collaborative research with private industry and other research institutions and to rapidly license research derived technologies for their commercial development; educate faculty, students, and entrepreneurs to enhance awareness of technology transfer and commercialization processes through public lectures, seminars and invited speakers, provide services to the SDSU Innovation Campus; and assist both entrepreneurs and all SD BOR system schools to work together to create new science and technology-based startup companies.

This project will effectively use taxpayer funds to drive science and technology-based economic development that will create new jobs, new technology based businesses, improved economic wellbeing and a more globally competitive economy.
